As previously mentioned, one video cassette I use to watch over and over was the Video Hits special focused on the three major popstars of the 80’s: Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna. This has got to be one of my favourite tracks of hers and I didn’t really know till later on how much the music video was influenced by Marilyn Monroe (Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend). Unfortunately I can’t really listen to this song in the same way once I began watching Gaki No Tsukai batsu games.
Madonna has never sounded the same ever since.
Here’s the list that the Time Out Brains Trust and The Good Citizens of Facebook has put together, with a space for you to add any song we’ve overlooked. Voting is open for a week and then we will reveal what is, according to DEMOCRACY, the worst song of all time.
Half the tracks on this list do not deserve to be on it!
Me, Myself & I [Aussie Pop]
A few weeks ago I invited a few of the guys over on an extremely warm Sunday evening. Here in Melbourne we had been experiencing some ridiculously hot days and I thought, why not kick back with the boys over some beers and snacks.
As we sat around outside eating nachos and getting bitten by mosquitoes, I started talking about the Nottest 100 list to Law. Frankly I was quite outraged as half the songs on the list were songs I love. You can tell as these were the songs that tended to appear on the Raye’s Outdoors Mix. We began going through the list and as expected, the guys were also outraged by some of the choices.
I mean, c’mon, Total Eclipse of the Heart?! That’s like one of the greatest powerballads of all time!
From there we began to youtube Australian pop music videos from the late 90s/early 00. Now anyone who’s watched Video Hits or Rage will know we weren’t always renowned for our alternative indie artists like now. A lot of it was just pure manufactured crap that somehow was entertaining/catchy in their own twisted ways. Funny because as we made our way through bands such as Scandal’us, Mercury 4 and Gabriella Cilmi that’s when it suddenly hit me.
I remembered at the very moment why I started Backseat Ballads in the first place.
Just that session with all of us singing along and laughing to all these songs reminded me of when me, Law, John and Raye use to do this after our first camp back in 2011. Our love for cheesy ballads and pop songs evolve into what would be known as Me, Myself & I. Yep, another facebook group!
And probably the most important factor would stem from that warm summers night. And our love/obsession has grown exponentially ever since.
It’s who we are as humans, it’s in our nature.
It’s why… We sing.

There’s always songs that you can play to others and the immediate reaction would be ‘OMG I HAVEN’T HEARD THIS SONG IN YEARS’. In many ways thats what me and my friends enjoy doing: rediscovering and sharing the forgotten classics and gems of the past. You can say that’s one part of why we have the Raye’s Outdoors Mix to begin with.
I do wonder what happened to Stacie Orrico since then, this song was such a great song and it really does make me sad she never really got the fame she deserved.

Once upon a time before you downloaded torrents to get your music dose, one would spend hours on programs such as KaZaa or Limewire downloading songs you wanted. Many times it became a gamble as you may find out the version you downloaded was either 1. distorted or 2. by a completely different artist.
The latter seem to be quite common as many songs on those programs were simply based off the filename that people had them. So for instance Tish had always assumed this song was by Babyface and rightly so. I know because I thought it was by him as well until I actually listened to this track on the actual album. Funny how times have changed.

One of my favourite directors of all time is Wong Kar Wai. It was 2003 when we decided to have a movie night at my cousins place in the US. Being the ‘guest’ I was given the choice of choosing what film to watch that night. At the local Blockbuster, I was astoinished to find Chungking Express on VHS. I felt bad as it caused abit of a hassle for my uncle who had to connect the VCR but in 10 minutes time we got around to watching it.
There are some films that literally change your life and this was one of them. I remember sitting there at the end of the film in awe, letting all the imagery, thoughts and emotions soak in. It’s still hands down one of my favourite films and this song in many ways encapsulates the feeling I get everytime I watch it. Plus they play this song like 5+ times throughout the course of the film haha.

Raye’s Outdoors Mix: BSB 2 Year Anniversary Theme Song
With the official 2 year anniversary since the inception of Backseat Ballads, I figure it would only seem right if we had a song to commemorate this occasion. I mean, shit, this blog has been running for two years! I can still remember the moment when I made this blog and little did I know how much of an impact this would have on not only me but the others in the group (I hope).
And what better than the smooth intense vocals of our man, Michael Bolton. For a long time I’ve been meaning to write something up for this song and it’s only fitting this should be the case. For it was this song that would usher in a new era. This was the first song on what would be the very first edition of the Raye’s Outdoors Mix.
It was on our first camp and we had just left Healesville to make our way to Maroondah Dam. Peter told me to put on my cd and with glee I inserted it in and anticpated the reactions of my fellow passengers (Law and Raye). And once those notes hit, you can hear the sound of excitement fill the car. I’ll never forget that moment and it’s one of the reasons why this song will always hold a special place not only in my heart but the legacy that has come to be since that sunny December day in 2011.
I received an email from Tumblr today saying it’s the two year anniversary since I started the blog. Wow, 2 years. Never did I really expect this blog to actually go anywhere and look where we are now. You can even read the very first entry I ever wrote:
Who knows how long this blog will last… maybe this might be the only entry. But I know I’ve had a blast this summer and it’s definitely one of the best I’ve experienced in a long time. Everyone loves a good roadtrip and I know that regardless of the tiring walks, the ridiculous amounts of insects and the wasted money spent on overpriced items that it was all worth it in the end. And I wouldn’t change one thing.
Time passes by so quickly and even this very moment I’m still trying to process it all. How did it go by so quickly? When I first created this blog, all I wanted was to create an online space where I could document all the adventures and things me and my friends would get up to. Initially it was moreso towards our camps/roadtrips but it’s slowly become something more encompassing of us as a whole. From our love of junk food, cooking adventures and late night cruises, I believe it’s now become a living document of us in this point of time.
I use to compare BSB akin to a yearbook and I still firmly believe that’s still the case. Unfortunately my plans of having a printed edition of our adventures is long gone though I still have hope I’ll get around to creating it in the future. But for now our main focus is really just getting our new website up and running.
Obviously as you may have noticed in the past, there’s been plenty of struggles where I’ve simply abandoned all hope of maintaining it all. There’s been so many times where I’ve given up and considered deleting it. Part of it stemmed from being overambitious and trying too hard to make the blog something that it simply wasn’t. Other times I just simply felt like so much responsibility fell down on me and that it was only myself who was still trying to keep this going.
But from that I began to discover so many lovely people who have helped push me to strive harder and offered me such kind words of encouragement and support when I felt like it was all pointless. Nothing can beat the feeling of knowing that somehow, your grammatically incorrect need to proofread writeups can somehow inspire others to go out and go on their own adventures. I know I’m not a writer and sometimes even I don’t know why I still continue with it. Still, I know the feeling of seeing photos on tumblr and thinking ‘Man, I really want to go camping now’. And to think the photos we take somehow have that same impact on others is a feeling even I can’t describe.
So thank you. Whether it’d be joining us on our adventures, supporting us or simply liking our content, I can’t stress how much it all means to me. And to paraphrase, who knows how long Backseat Ballads will last but I sure do hope the journey will be an epic one right till the end.

I won’t deny it, I feel awfully flattered when I get compared to Ryan Gosling. Hell, when my friends dubbed me ‘Asian Ryan Gosling’ it filled me with such immense joy inside that all I could muster up was 'Oh shut up'.
One night we were having a romantic movie marathon which included both this and The Notebook when I remarked how much his character in this film reminded me of… me. It’s a bit of an eye opener but it’s reassuring to know that it’s not always the girls who are hopeless romantics.
And this song, oh so sweet.
